Ransai was strongly influenced by the Chinese painter Shen Nanpin who introduced a ‘boneless’ painting style (i.e., an object’s shape not outlined in black) to Japan. Ransai used this style to draw the pictures in a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Ransai Gafu (i.e., Picture Album by Ransai). Published between 1778 and 1802, the last volume included the nineteen pictures shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it.
